Creating "Carry That Weight" (2023)

Creating "Carry That Weight" (2023)

In so much of my art, I depict heavy objects. These symbols most often represent a constant looming feeling of guilt, regret, despair, or all of the above. I believe this was the first portrayal of weights in my portfolio and where the pattern began. The words in the foreground are lyrics from the Beatles' song this piece was named after. I listened to the Beatles insufferably throughout my childhood and early adolescence. I began this project in an extended period of isolation in my life. I had much time to reflect on my mistakes and pains of the past and began attempting to release them. The random objects strewn about mimic space junk against the black background. Throughout my teenaged years I made a habit of dropping tabs and one night I was introduced to Cowboy Bebop and was immediately hypnotized by its concept and themes. The infamous phrase "You're gonna carry that weight" appears in this series as all the characters deal with their personal baggage throughout the episodes. I believe we subconsciously gravitate to media that we can relate to. If you this work resonates with you, I wish you relief from your burdens.
